WASHINGTON SQUARE DREAMS by Gorilla Repertory Theater
Eight ten-minute plays, all set during an outdoor performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, celebrating the magic powers of live theatre. It premiered at 413 West 44th Street in New York City in November 2000. Gorilla Repertory Theater, under its artistic director, Christopher Sanderson, best known for their annual free outdoor productions of Shakespeare, commissioned these works by Matthew Ethan Davis, Gary Giovannetti, Arlene Hutton, Joe Lauinger, Jeni Mahoney, Anthony P. Pennino, Craig Pospisil, and Ben Sahl.
FATE by Elizabeth Horsburgh
A sharply written, compact play. A mysterious letter ignites romantic flights of fancy for a pair of passionate strangers. It was originally produced by Screaming Venus as part of the Kallisti Festival in March 2000. Elizabeth Horsburgh is a member of Screaming Venus, a theatre company dedicated primarily to producing the works of women.
VELVET ROPES by Joshua Scher
A tale of two innocents trapped in an art museum. They contemplate the nature of humor, performance and art in this hilarious one-act play. Its New York premiere was at the 2000 New York International Fringe Festival under the auspices of The Drama League. Joshua Scher has completed the Playwriting Program at Yale School of Drama in 2001. His plays have been produced at the 52nd Street Project (New Haven) and the Hangar Theatre (Ithaca, NY).
THE LANGUAGE OF KISSES by Edmund De Santis
An estranged mother and daughter come to terms with the past and themselves. It is a moving drama by the author of Making Peter Pope. Originally presented in a staged reading at the Harbor Theatre in May 2000, it has not yet had a full-scale production. Edmund De Santis is the author of Making Peter Pope, published in Plays and Playwrights for the New Millennium, and many other plays. He is a founding member of New York’s Harbor Theatre.
WORD TO YOUR MAMA by Julia Lee Barclay
A stream of consciousness tour-de-force for three voices. It takes the audience channel surfing through a turn of the millennium mind trapped in the collective body of a night secretary. It was produced by Screaming Venus at the Kallisti Festival, and subsequently at the New York International Fringe Festival in 2000. Julia Lee Barclay is a director, playwright and teacher who has worked at such varied venues as Mabou Mines, The Present Company, and Chisendale Dance Space in London.
CUBAN OPERATOR PLEASE... by Adrian Rodriguez
A thoughtful and moving short play about the effects of exile and death on the relationship between a father and son. This play was originally produced by Hudson Exploited Theatre Company at the 2000 New York International Fringe Festival. Adrian Rodriguez is a founder and current president of the Havana on the Hudson Project. He teaches history in the New Jersey public school system. His second play, La Fabrica, was produced in New York City in 2001.
THE ELEPHANT MAN - THE MUSICAL by Jeff Hylton & Tim Werenko
A wickedly funny parody of all that’s excessive in contemporary musical theatre. John Merrick gets to sing and dance on Broadway. It debuted at Upstairs at Rose’s Turn in Greenwich Village in December 1999. Jeff Hylton & Tim Werenko are both graduates of NYU, and have collaborated on three screenplays and a couple of musicals. Each has also written a novel.
HOUSE OF TRASH by Trav S.D.
A raucous populist musical farce about Bob Maggot, a garbage man moonlighting as a Baptist preacher, and his eccentric family. It was originally produced by Mountebanks at HERE in January 2000. Trav S.D. is a playwright, producer, director, actor, critic, comedian, and Master of Ceremonies who claims to be the ‘Strongest Comic Relief Available Without a Prescription.’
STRAIGHT-JACKET by Richard Day
The story of a gay movie star who falls in love with his screenwriter, it is a brilliantly funny and incisive satire of Hollywood and hypocrisy. It was presented off-Broadway at Playhouse 91 in June 2000. Richard Day is an Emmy nominated writer and producer of The Larry Sanders Show, Ellen, Spin City, and other shows. Straight-Jacket is his first play.
